Cherga Hat in Stenli Folklor – Free Knitting Pattern

date: 25/09/2026

Rich colours, chunky stitches and a beautifully woven look – the Cherga Hat takes its inspiration from traditional colourful textiles. The marled strands of Stenli Folklor create an expressive texture that gives each hat its own character.

Cherga Hat knitted in Stenli Folklore – front view Cherga Hat – Tweed stitch texture and crown shaping

The hat is worked from the bottom up in the round, with gradual decreases shaping a soft, rounded crown. The free pattern includes three sizes and detailed knitting instructions.

Materials

  • Yarn: Stenli Folklor, 1 hank of 100 g / 60 m; 50% wool and 50% acrylic, super bulky weight.
  • Sample colour: 26963.
  • Needles: 9 mm (US 13), or size needed to obtain gauge – double-pointed needles, two circular needles, or a circular needle at least 80 cm / 32 inches long for Magic Loop.
  • A stitch marker for the beginning of the round.
  • A yarn needle for weaving in ends and scissors.

Sizes and gauge

Choose your size according to your head circumference:

  • Size 1: to fit 52–55 cm; finished height approximately 19 cm.
  • Size 2: to fit 55–58 cm; finished height approximately 21 cm.
  • Size 3: to fit 58–62 cm; finished height approximately 22.5 cm.

Gauge: 11 stitches and 14.5 rounds = 10 × 10 cm / 4 × 4 inches in Tweed Pattern, worked in the round and blocked.

What makes the texture special?

The Tweed Pattern combines knit, purl and slipped stitches with yarn overs passed over the stitches just worked. A two-round repeat creates a textured fabric reminiscent of weaving. The colourful strands of Folklore enhance this effect without the need to switch between separate yarns.

The pattern includes instructions for the Estonian cast-on, the stitch pattern and crown shaping for all three sizes.

A tip for a beautiful finish

Make a swatch in the round and check your gauge after blocking before starting your hat. When joining the cast-on stitches, take care not to twist the edge. Once finished, weave in the ends and gently block the hat to the measurements given in the pattern.
